Convicted Tennessee sex offender found with cocaine near park, day care
NASHVILLE,Tenn.--A convicted Tennessee sex offender has been jailed after police found him with cocaine near a park and child care center.
Metro Nashville Police say 51-year-old Herbert Lee Chatman is known to deal drugs in the area of 12th Avenue North and Wheeless Street.
On Wednesday, detectives approached Chatman and say they observed him throw an object on the ground behind a vehicle. When they looked at what Chatman tossed, they say they found a clear plastic bag with 4.7 grams of cocaine.
They also found a crack pipe in his left pants pocket. Police say the incident took place within 1,000 feet of Elizabeth Park and within 1,000 feet of Andrea's ABC Child Care.
Chatman has been charged with unlawful use of drug paraphernalia and possession of cocaine in a drug free school zone. Due to the location and Chatman being a sex offender, he is being held with bond conditions.
According to the sex offender registry, Chatman was convicted in 2004 for promotion of prostitution.
