WASHINGTON, D.C. - FOX17 NEWS is committed to tracking how your tax dollars are being spent. Just like you, we don't like seeing your money wasted. That may be the case with $100,000 spent to spruce up a dog park. FOX17 Special Correspondent Kai Jackson looks into how 2009 government stimulus money was spent. In 2009 with the economy on the brink of a financial meltdown, Congress and the President passed a mega-economic bill to the tune of $787 billion at the time. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was supposed to save the economy and create about 1.5 million jobs. 5 years later, there's still debate over whether the stimulus was successful. We tracked the truth and looked at where the money went.
Recovery.gov says $840 billion has been spent so far. With so much money flowing there has been questionable spending. One example is Marion Park in Southeast Washington, D.C. More than $92,000 of stimulus money is being spent to improve this dog park. President Obama specifically promised this wouldn't happen.
Pete Sepp is with the National Taxpayers Union. He says the D.C. dog park illustrates a lack of oversight. It wasn't just the dog park spending in question. Other examples include a $3.4 million tunnel for turtles in Florida. $62 million went to a controversial so-called tunnel to nowhere in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Nearly $200,000 ($193,956) to study voter perceptions of the Economic Stimulus Package.
As one citizen explains, spending taxpayer dollars is often an issue of what benefits one group others may think is wasteful. To learn how your tax dollars are being spent, CLICK HERE.
