St. Jude Dream Home Honoree
New Johnsonville, Humphreys County
A Humphrey's County teen spent his first three years of life in an orphanage until mom Teresa Hamilton showed up in Ukraine to give him a home.
The single mom, also a teacher... recalls warming up to Evan in the Ukranian orphanage.
Once home, life was nothing, but good for Evan here in the states for eight years until he started having some strange health symptoms. All of the sudden, the child who loves basketball, golf and tennis couldn't walk.
His mom describes it this way, "After that, it went to his hip and it got to the point where he couldn't walk. He went to school on a walker which was not very fun for him."
Doctors diagnosed Evan with Non Hodgkins Lymphoma which is incredibly rare for a child. Evans says, "My hip, I just had really bad hip pain and my jaw wouldn't open and I couldn't eat and I couldn't walk. I felt really awful like I was paralyzed."
Doctors speculate, but aren't certain, Evan's cancer could be caused by radiation released during the massive Chernobyl nuclear disaster. With that exposure, Evan's mom's not sure he'd be alive if left to treatment in Ukraine.
She believes in her heart that St Jude is the only place equipped to save him and says, "There weren't a lot of protocols already set in place so I don't know that other doctors would have necessarily known where to start with him. It was a God thing. He knew we were meant to be and we needed each other and that's definitely true. His faith has been so strong and that's really what's kept me going. He never questioned that he was going to be ok that God was going to take care of him."
After a year of touch and go treatment, the rising 9th grader is cancer free two years and counting and getting ready to give away this St. Jude Dream Home built in his healthy honor !!!
Evan is pretty straight forward when talking about St. Jude, "I think I wouldn't be here on this Earth. I just really wouldn't think I'd be alive. St Jude saved my life."
