St. Jude Founder Danny Thomas
The children's hospital that treats the sickest of the sick all started with this man's dream to make a difference. Actor and comedian Danny Thomas opened the research hospital 52 years ago with one goal in mind; to rid the world of childhood cancer.
The research hospital has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. Today Thomas's bust sits in the hospital's research tower where there have been more clinical trials than at any other childrens hospital. His nose is super shiny from all the little hands who when they pass by rub it for good luck.
Danny Thomas struggled, as most actors do, at first to break into showbiz. One day, so desperate for direction, he stood before a statue of St Jude, the Patron Saint of Hopeless Causes and said these words: "Help me find my way and I'll build you a shrine."
In the years that followed, Thomas' career took off, earning him five Emmy's. Even with all that success, Thomas still remembered his promise to St. Jude and now the hospital is the shrine which has become the premiere pediatric cancer center in the country and is internationally recognized for its pioneering research and life saving treatments.
