Signature Drive Underway For Wine In Grocery Stores -- Sky Arnold

Updated: Tuesday, July 15 2014, 07:31 AM CDT
NASHVILLE, Tenn -- A visit to customer service comes with a request at the Kroger on Lebanon Pike in Hermitage.

"Would you like to sign our wine petition," asked a store employee.

The law that authorized wine sales in grocery stores requires each community that wants the change to hold a referendum.

A certain number of registered voters' signatures are needed by August 21st to make that vote happen in November.

That's why grocers all across the state are getting signatures of people like Lynn Beal.

"To me it's a lot more convenient than having to go to the liquor store it's kind of silly," said Beal.

In Nashville 15,460 signatures are needed.

Thousands have been turned in already but it's unclear how many more will be needed.

At last report only 739 signatures have been verified but the Election Commission still has thousands that it hasn't had time to review yet.

The signature drive is coming right as another big change is hitting liquor stores.

The agreement that allowed wine in grocery stores also allowed liquor stores to sell beer starting July 1st.

Some liquor stores have yet to take advantage of the change but Main Street Liquors owner Martin Bubis has.

Bubis says it's been a learning experience.

"We thought your name brand beers would be the big thing but we found the craft beers have been huge and we're not making more room to put new craft beers in," said Bubis.
