A former Grundy County Sheriff’s Department captain has been indicted for allegedly stealing handguns from the department's evidence room, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a press release on Wednesday.
TBI agents began investigating Deke Matthew Stone on August 1, 2013. During the course of the investigation, they determined that in June 2013, Stone took three handguns from the department’s evidence room. Stone left his job with the department before the TBI case began.
On Monday, a Grundy County grand jury returned indictments for the Altamont man, charging him with one count of official misconduct and one count of theft over $1,000.
On Wednesday, the 33-year-old turned himself in to the TBI at the Grundy County Jail, where he was released after posting a $7,500 bond.
