Protecting your money this morning, more than 30 million kids get breakfast and lunch in school each day. But there's debate over money wasted in the National School Lunch Program.
The program costs taxpayers $14 billion dollars a year. But the USDA says about $1 billion dollars worth of food is thrown away each year.
The National Taxpayers Union says school districts feel pressured to enroll students for free and reduced lunch... because they fear losing federal dollars in other areas.
The Government Accountability Institute says one problem is a new government initiative called community eligibility, which means an entire community can be opted in to get reduced or free school lunches, whether they need it or not.
Another problem is paying professional athletes to endorse the program.
