Less Than a Thousand Tennesseans Sign Up For Obamacare -- Sky Arnold

Updated: Wednesday, November 13 2013, 11:50 PM CST
Ben Kann first visited the website in August.

Kann says he couldn't properly log in until Sunday and even now he's still waiting for it to verify his identity.

It's a big worry as Kann's employer doesn't offer insurance.

"It's very frustrating because I wish a process like this could be completed in a few hours time," said Kann.

The Department of Health and Human Services says nationwide 26,794 people have signed up for Obamacare through including 992 in Tennessee.

Those statistics and stories like Kann's sparked strong criticism for Obamacare Wednesday at a House Oversight Committee hearing in Washington.

Congressman Darrell Issa was among thsoe expressing opposition.

"They weren't close to ready this wasn't a small mistake," said Issa.

Fox 17 wondered how common the issues are in Tennessee so we asked the Sandy Dimick Family and Children's Service.

Her organization helps people in Nashville enroll in Obamacare.
"We have a lot of people who have gotten all the way through the process so we're getting different feedback.  I would say it's half and half for the people we talk to," said Dimick.

Dimick believes the internet problems will eventually be worked out and she's encouraging people who can't log on to visit

It's a site where you can start comparing plans that will be available once you get through on

"Were asking people to be patient and persistent.  Sometimes you might get part of the way through and then get back on and get all the way through," said Dimick.

When that happens it will be a big relief for Kann.

"I really hope it works out.  I know the government has a lot of work to do," said Kann.
