American Idol alum Lauren Alaina got to take in the sights and sounds of Christmas in New York City for the first time this year. Perfect timing as she sends out her new Christmas song for a cause."My Grown Up Christmas List" was always been one of my favorites and I have worked with the special olympics since I was 10 years old. I am the ambassador of project unify and the special olympics has a christmas cd they put out every year called a very special christmas and that song is going to be on their album." says Alaina, who is very passionate about the organization. "In January of 2013 this year I got to go to korea for the world games special olympics and it was the coolest thing I've ever done in my life and the athletes work so hard and they are better at sports than I am, and I'm pretty athletic, I did a unified sport with them snowshoeing - you put these things on your feet and run through the show it's really hard, I got last place. No matter what place they get they are just excited to be there and to get to see that up close the way I get to see that is the coolest thing
The singer is planning to release her sophomore album in the new year. "I finally feel I have gotten into my own little pocket of me as a songwriter and an artist because I was 15-16 on idol and I threw together an album and I really took my time with this one"
So as she continues on her career path, she says there's one lesson she learned on American Idol that she lives by. "I think it was Jennifer Lopez who said to me do not read what people say about you, it will just bring you down. I don't know if she just said it to me or a group of us, and it has helped me so much because you know when you're in the spotlight people want to bring you down. Just ignoring it and loving yourself is the most important thing."
