"I've had a charted record for 7 decades. I'm going for number eight. Only Willie Nelson can beat me" laughs Kenny Rogers. The country mainstay hasn't had an album since 2006. Now seven years, "The Gambler" released what he says is the best and most diverse album he's ever recorded. "I can only compete in one of two ways. I can do what everyone else is doing and do it better and I don't like my chances, or do something no one else is doing and you don't invite comparison."
One of the most exciting tracks is a duet with Dolly Parton. Also the album title, "You Can't Make Old Friends" brings the two legends together one final time' We sing this song and they show clips of our career over years. It's very touching and poignantly sad, but honestly it's wonderful" says Rogers.
There are a couple songs on the album Rogers says you wouldn't expect from him. Rogers He says he knows the sound of country has changed and because of that, he knows the songs on this album may never get radio play. "As Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard said, country has changed and it's good. I think it's a wonderful thing."
Rogers has a theory. One he always has and always will sing by. "Success is no reason to quit. I truly love what I am doing and if this is the last album I'm going to do then I'm gonna do the songs I want to do"
But is this really Rogers last album? "Who knows" he says. "If I live long enough I will do another one. If not, then I won't" Rogers laughs.
