NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Pappy Merritts isn't a name many people recognize. Right now, he is celebrating his 85th birthday by doing the same thing he's done for the last 50 years: playing on stage right here in Music City. For 85 year old Pappy Merritts, age is just a number.

For the last 12 years, the folksy fiddler has made a home playing at Robert's Western World on Monday nights with John England and the Western Swingers.

Pappy's got some stories. A pint-sized Pappy bought his first instrument in 1938 when he was only 9 years old. As he grew up, Pappy went wherever the music took him, which was all over the country. Pappy's boots first landed on Broadway long before Taylor Swift, Blake Shelton and Jason Aldean were even born. Pappy played with the likes of Bill Monroe and Patsy Cline. He says he even took his fiddle overseas and performed for the troops during the Korean War. Pappy even played for Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford.

It's a life worth being proud of, but Pappy prefers to live in the present, with all his friends and family celebrating his big day. 85 years in a nutshell. Pappy and his band aren't done playing yet.
