NASHVILLE, TN-- Metro Police say the death of Wayne Mills is still under investigation.
Wayne Mills, 44, was shot at Pit and Barrel Bar on Saturday. Police say the bar owner, Chris Michaels Ferrell shot Mills in the head after an altercation over smoking in the bar. Ferrell claims he shot Mills out of self-defense.
Wayne Mills' body was released from the medical examiner and is now in a Arab, Alabama funeral home. Mills' funeral is set for Sunday, December 8th.
Many people who know the Mills family are holding fundraisers for the Carol and Jack, Wayne' wife and son.
Kelly and Craig Dever held a turkey fry this morning in Nolensville and raised $2,700 for the family. Last night, a benefit was held at Winners Bar in Nashville. Shows and fundraisers are also planned in states from Ohio to Alabama to support the Mills family.
Kelly Dever said, " I think that just says a lot about him and his character. He was generally a nice man and he was obviously a very talented musician."
Many people wonder what is going to happen to Chris Michaels Ferrell. Wayne Mills and Ferrell were reportedly friends. Timothy Chance was a close friend of Mills and also a friend to Ferrell.
Timothy Chance said, " Everybody just wants to make sure the investigation is thorough and we get to the truth."
Chris Ferrell declined to do an interview, but his attorney David Raybin released this statement to Fox 17:
" I can confirm that I am
representing Mr. Ferrell. It would be premature to address this in any detail
except to advise that Mr. Ferrell and I are cooperating with the
police in their investigation of the case.--David Raybin"
The investigation is gaining widespread media attention. Tonight, Nancy Grace featured a segment on the Wayne Mills shooting at 7:00 p.m.
