Kyle Busch wins under a caution at Daytona
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Kyle Busch survived a drag race with Carl Edwards to win a wreck-filled race at Daytona International Speedway under caution. It's his sixth win of the season on the Sprint Cup circuit. Busch has 12 wins spanning all three of NASCAR's top series this year. Busch was racing side-by-side with Edwards with just over a lap to go when a multicar accident erupted behind them. The field was immediately frozen. NASCAR reviewed its scoring data to determine who was out front at the time of the caution, and Busch was awarded the win. Matt Kenseth ran third, followed by Kurt Busch in fourth and David Ragan. Kyle Busch is the Sprint Cup Series points leader by 182 points over Dale Earnhardt Junior. IRL-WATKINS GLEN: QUALIFYING Briscoe on Watkins Glen pole; Dixon starting 4th WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (AP) -- Ryan Briscoe has the pole for Sunday's IRL race at Watkins Glen. Briscoe's fast lap of 1:29.34 gives him his second series pole and 36th for Team Penske. Justin Wilson will start second, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay . Scott Dixon qualified fourth.
Six straight for the Rays...Yanks drop Red Sox 4 games back...Mets end Phils' 4-game win streak
UNDATED (AP) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have their largest division lead of the season. Andy Sonnanstine pitched five-hit ball over seven innings and the Rays beat the Kansas City Royals 3-0 for their sixth straight win. The Rays increased their AL East lead to a season-high four games over Boston. Tampa Bay has won 10 of 11. Sonnanstine is 10-and-3 after winning his fourth straight decision. In the rest of the AL: -- The New York Yankees held off Boston 2-1 after losing the first two of their weekend series. Closer Mariano Rivera pitched himself in and out of a no-out, bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth. He struck out Coco Crisp, retired Jason Varitek on a popup and fanned Julio Lugo for the final out for his 23rd save. Mike Mussina won his 11th game. -- Nick Swisher, Brian Anderson and Alexei Ramirez homered and the Chicago White Sox posted a 6-1 win over the Oakland Athletics. Gavin Floyd won his 10th game. -- Minnesota stayed a game back of Chicago in the Central by beating Cleveland 9-6. Joe Mauer homered, walked three times and scored three runs. The Indians have lost seven in a row. -- Ian Kinsler homered and the Texas Rangers used a sharp pitching performance by substitute starter Scott Feldman to beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3. Feldman got the start when Eric Hurley was scratched with a hamstring injury. -- Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the L.A. Angels 7-5. Roy Halladay is 10-and-6. -- Seattle rallied with two in the ninth to nip Detroit 3-2. Jeff Clement homered twice, including a two-run shot in the eighth for the M's. In the National League: -- One night after Colorado rallied to beat Florida 18-7, the Rockies beat the Marlins again 12-6 for their fifth straight win. After hitting six homers Friday night, Colorado hit four more. Matt Holliday homered and drove in four. Joe Koshansky hit his first major-league homer. Chris Iannetta and Brad Hawpe also went deep. -- The St. Louis Cardinals rallied with three in the bottom of the ninth to beat the NL Central-leading Cubs 5-4. That Cubs' lead is now two and a-half games over St. Louis. Rick Ankiel slapped a two-run, two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to cap a three-run rally against Cubs closer Kerry Wood, who blew his fifth save in 27 chances. -- Prince Fielder singled in Rickie Weeks with one out in the bottom of the ninth and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 for their second straight win. -- The New York Mets beat Philadelphia 9-4. Pinch-hitter Brian Schneider lined a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning to help end the Phillies' four-game losing streak. -- Houston beat Atlanta 6-1. Mark Loretta had three doubles and drove in four runs to help Houston snap a four-game losing streak. -- Cincinnati handed the Washington Nationals their fourth straight loss, 3-2. Brandon Phillips singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. -- Jake Peavy threw seven scoreless innings and Scott Hairston homered twice in the San Diego Padres' 4-2 victory over slumping Arizona. The Diamondbacks have lost five of eight to fall two games under .500 but are still in first in the NL West. -- Randy Winn and Fred Lewis hit two-out RBI singles during San Francisco's four-run rally in the seventh inning and the Giants kept the L.A. Dodgers in second place in the NL West with a 5-2 comeback victory.
Hoelzer sets world record in 200 backstroke...Phelps secures eight-race schedule in Beijing
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Margaret Hoelzer has set the ninth world record of the U.S. swimming trials, winning the 200-meter backstroke in 2 minutes, 6.09 seconds. The 25-year-old beat the record of 2:06.39 set by Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry in February. Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Beisel, a rising star in American swimming, rallied to take the second Olympic spot in 2:06.92. In other swimming trials news: -- Michael Phelps will get another chance to go after Mark Spitz's seven-medal Olympic record in Beijing. Phelps locked up his eight-race schedule by winning the 100-meter butterfly at the U.S. swimming trials. Phelps easily beat world-record holder Ian Crocker for his fifth individual win at the trials. -- Katie Hoff has claimed a fifth individual race in Beijing by winning the 800-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials. -- Garrett Weber-Gale has completed a sprint double at the U.S. Olympic swimming trials, winning the 50-meter freestyle with an American record of 21.47 seconds. Defending world champion Ben Wildman-Tobriner got the second Olympic spot. -- Lara Jackson sets an American record in the 50-meter freestyle. She touched in 24.50 seconds to break the old mark of 24.90 set by Dara Torres at the 2000 trials.
Gay injured at Olympic trials
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) -- It's a good thing Tyson Gay qualified for the 100 meters at the upcoming Olympics, because America's best sprinter won't be running in the 200 in Beijing. Gay had to be carted off the track after suffering a severe cramp in his hamstring near the start of his 200-meter quarterfinal at the U.S. Olympic track and field trials. Gay called it "just one of those things." Gay qualified for the Olympics in the 100 meters last week. In other news from the track and field trials: -- Michelle Carter, Kristin Heaston and Jillian Camarena have made the U.S. Olympic team in the women's shot put. Carter's winning throw was a personal-best 61 feet, 10 and a-quarter inches. Her father, Michael Carter, won the silver medal in the shot put at the 1984 Olympics. -- Jessica Crosby, Amber Campbell and Loree Smith made the U.S. Olympic team in the women's hammer throw. Crosby won with a throw of 232 feet. -- Jesse Williams, Andra Manson and Dustin Jonas made the U.S. Olympic team in the men's high jump. -- Anthony Famiglietti, Billy Nelson and Josh McAdams qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the men's steeplechase.
Williams family snags two Wimbledon titles
WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Venus Williams has her fifth Wimbledon singles title, beating younger sister Serena 7-5, 6-4. The defending champion, Venus is 5-and-2 in Wimbledon finals, losing only to Serena in 2002 and '03. The win at the All England Club gives Venus her seventh major title. She also won Wimbledon in 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2007. The match was the seventh Grand Slam final between the sisters, with Serena holding a 5-2 edge. They're now 8-and-8 overall. About three and 1-2 hours later, the sisters won the women's doubles championship beating Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur 6-2, 6-2. As a doubles team, Venus and Serena are 7-and-0 in Grand Slam finals. The men's final is today, with five-time defending champion Roger Federer taking on second-seed Rafael Nadal . Federer has beaten Nadal in the last two Wimbledon finals and has won 65 straight matches on grass. PGA-AT&T NATIONAL Pernice tops leaderboard at Congressional BETHESDA, Md. (AP) -- Tom Pernice Junior fired a 69 and had a one-shot lead over Steve Stricker after three rounds of the PGA's AT&T National in Bethesda, Maryland. Tommy Armour III is tied with Nick O'Hern and Jeff Overton two shots off the lead at Congressional Country Club outside Washington.
It's rainy in Arkansas
ROGERS, Ark. (AP) -- Meena Lee shot a 65 in the second round to finish the day at 12 under and is tied for the lead with Eun-Hee Ji, who had two holes remaining in her second round of the rain-plagued Northwest Arkansas event on the LPGA Tour. Angela Park shot a 10-under 62 and is one shot back along with Kristy McPherson. About half the field was still on the course when play was suspended because of darkness. The tournament has been delayed twice by bad weather.
