Tired firefighters battle 330 Calif. wildfires
July 06, 2008 07:27 EDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says firefighters battling hundreds of blazes in his state are stretched thin and are exhausted.

But they are getting a little help from the weather.

Winds fanning the worst of the fires, in Santa Barbara, calmed overnight and are expected to stay low today. Cooler, moist air is also helping. The so-called Gap fire near the Santa Barbara town of Goleta is getting top priority. It's burned about 13 square miles of land. People have been ordered out of 2,600 homes and hundreds more are on standby notice. Investigators think the fire was started by humans last week but aren't sure if it was intentionally set.

To the north along the coast at Big Sur, a fire that began two weeks ago has expanded across 111 square miles. Crews are being helped by cooler weather and fog, but say it could take the rest of the month to get it fully contained.
