Dan Does the Opry - 03/19/14

When you're former CBS evening news anchor Dan Rather, there isn't a lot you haven't seen.  In Rather's case, there aren't many places you haven't been either.  This afternoon I learned from the Grand Ole Opry that Rather was about to knock off another line from his bucket list.  Rather has signed on to be a guest announcer this week on the Friday Night Opry.

The Opry is welcoming guest announcers to help celebrate 40-years of shows at the Grand Ole Opry House in Donelson.  Artists Rather will be rubbing elbows with include:  The Oak Ridge Boys; Charlie Daniels; Kathy Mattea and The Grascals.  And as Dan Rather used to say at the end of his broadcasts, "that's part of our world tonight."

WINTRY WEATHER-SKIING

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) -- The winter storm that hit much of the East made it tough for Thanksgiving travelers. But it's good news to New England ski areas. Dave Meeker of Mount Snow in Vermont says it's a "dream come true." The resort opens for the season today. Noelle Tuttle, spokeswoman for Maine's Sugarloaf, says even the rumor of snow generates a lot of excitement. Area ski resorts say the early storm is getting people to think about skiing for their Christmas vacation.

BREWERS BARE IT

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) -- These brewers are baring more than their beer. Brawny beer makers are stripping for charity. The 2015 Brew Men Calendar features 11 brewing pros from the Sheboygan, Wisconsin, area. Not too surprisingly, the idea was hatched over some beers. But the brew men don't expose too much. Strategically placed pieces of beer making equipment protect their modesty. Sheboygan Press Media reports the calendars cost 20 bucks each, with the proceeds going to local charities.

SANTA BANK ROBBER

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Say it ain't so Santa! The FBI is looking for Santa Claus in a San Diego County bank robbery. Actually, Ol' Saint Nick isn't the suspect. Authorities are on the hunt for a robber who was wearing sunglasses, a fake beard and a Santa Claus hat. This evil elf was armed with a gun and demanded large bills from a teller at a Chase bank branch. Officials say no one was hurt and the gunman escaped with an undisclosed amount of money.

ANIMAL MASSAGE

UNDATED (AP) -- Dog lovers want their best friends rubbed the right way. Shelah Barr is a San Francisco dog massage therapist. She says massage can give the four-legged members of the family "a high quality of life." But don't expect incense burning around the massage table. Barr says she'll often give her patients a bone to chew on. On Barr's Happy Hounds Massage website, an initial house call is listed at $90. Follow-up visits are 75 bucks.
