FLAMING CAKE

MAYWOOD, N.J. (AP) -- How's this for a hot idea? Add lighter fluid and gasoline to a birthday cake and you can guess what happens. Police say a northern New Jersey man wanted to video the flaming cake and post it on YouTube. Maywood Police Chief David Pegg says when first responders arrived, the man was yelling at his wife for calling 911. The Record newspaper reports the fire didn't spread beyond the kitchen table. Authorities add the flaming cake stunt doesn't appear to be a crime.

ROCK RIVER RESCUE

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) -- What can brown do for you? How about save your life? Authorities in Rockford, Illinois, say a UPS driver risked his own life to rescue a man who had jumped into a river. The Rockford Register Star reports Jeff Hermanson saw the man in water, parked his truck and jumped in. Hermanson was able to pull the man to the shore, who was then taken to a hospital. Police and firefighters at the scene say the Rock River can be treacherous because of fast current and cold water. Hermanson turned down medical treatment for himself and returned to work. Someone brought him dry clothes to wear while he continued his route.

SINGING TELEGRAMS

BROWNWOOD, Texas (AP) -- Singing telegrams are still alive in a West Texas county. The Brownwood High School choir is offering a singing telegram service Friday and Saturday in Brown County. Five bucks gets a singing telegram over the phone, $20 brings an in-person serenade. Choir director Cindy Franklin says the last Mother's Day telegram fundraiser brought more than 30 requests.

HONKING FREE SPEECH-LAWSUIT

ALBUEQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Honking is free speech. That's the contention of Mariah Martinez. She's filed a motion in court that Rio Rancho, New Mexico, violates drivers' First Amendment rights by pulling them over for flashing their lights or honking their horns. The Albuquerque Journal reports she was ticketed for flashing her headlights at an oncoming car with a police officer inside. A city spokeswoman says they don't comment on pending litigation.
