DALLAS (AP) -- Santa is carrying less of a load this year. Not in his sack full of toys -- but in his belly. We're talking about Chuck Lee, who plays the Jolly Ol' Elf in the Dallas area. Lee says he hit 290 in February and was having health problems. Lee's doctor told him he needed to change his diet and exercise or face surgery. This Santa has dropped 50 pounds since June. He tells the Dallas Morning News being a healthy Santa is his gift to himself. Lee says he cut out red meat and most dairy. But this Santa does admit to one weakness -- cookies.
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- A New Hampshire woman will have a merrier Christmas -- thanks to a stranger in a Walmart. Earlier this week, 51-year-old Rhonda Healey was looking at holiday cards when a man swiped the wallet from her purse. She had placed the pocketbook on the child seat of her shopping cart. Healey yelled for someone to stop the thief and a fellow shopper tackled the man. Police have charged 24-year-old Alan White with theft and lying about his identity.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The National Zoo's panda cub got a bit of a scare. Zoo officials in Washington say Bao Bao (bow-BOW') the baby panda spent Tuesday night in a tree and stayed up there Christmas Eve. The panda apparently touched a "hot wire" used for animal containment. Bao Bao was frightened and climbed into the tree. Zookeepers say Bao Bao's reaction was predictable and she's "perfectly fine." They've been posting updates on the zoo's Facebook page. Bao Bao turned 1 in August.
