Wimbledon is finally back! - 06/23/14

There's no sport I love more than tennis .. oh wait, a minute, it's Paul Jones that is the tennis fanatic in the Sports Department at Fox 17. Still, there's something about the tournament in England during the Summer that can capture any sports fan's attention. The truth is, my interest in tennis has gone down over the last decade for the same reason as many - not enough competitive American players.

Why is it? I remember growing up, and the stable of US players was incredible. Agassi, Sampras, and Courier were the best but my personal favorite was Michael Chang. Watching him beat Ivan Lendl at the French Open was awesome. Relive his awesome underhand serve moment here.

Hoping there are more great moments to remember  at this year's Wimbledon!

PORN SAFETY STANDARDS

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Some porn stars don't like California's proposed regs. The safety standards wouldn't be restricted to below the belt. Sex performers would even be required to wear protective eye gear in some situations. Producers of X-rated videos would also have to pay for medical tests and hepatitis B vaccine. The porn stars say if the new rules go in effect their adult videos will look like medical shows.

STRANDED BEER DRINKERS

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) -- At least they didn't go thirsty. Hundreds of people at an Alaska beer fest were stranded because of a broken down ferry. The Alaska Marine Highway System suffered a mechanical problem Sunday, during the annual Great Alaska Craft Beer and Home Brew Festival in Haines. The Juneau Empire reports many of those left high and dry scrambled to make alternative travel plans, including flights home.

MAINE PARK PASSES

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- It's just what the doctor ordered. Maine's primary care physicians are giving out more than 13,000 free Maine State Park Passes. The park freebies are to go to pediatric patients and families starting today. There's no rush to use those park passes. They're good through December.

CLEAN BEACHES

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) -- "Keep it Beachy Clean." That's the message to folks visiting Virginia Beach. The campaign is reminding beach-goers in the Virginia resort city to pick up their trash, don't leave cigarette butts and clean up after Fido. The Virginian-Pilot reports cigarette receptacles are being installed on the Boardwalk and at hotel entrances. Hotels will also get pocket ashtrays to hand out to guests.
