Trotzy's new team - 05/27/14

Barry Trotz was introduced today by the Washington Capitals as their new head coach. Congrats to the former Predator coach who spent so long in the Music City! Trotz was always a classy guy, even to the end in Nashville. In DC, he'll have the chance for firepower with mercurial forward Alex Ovechkin, a talent that was rarely seen on the home side at Bridgestoene Arena. It will be interesting to see how his notoriously defensive style in the past can mesh with one of the NHL's most talented offensive players.

But mostly, it's just nice to see a good thing happen to a good man. See you when you come back, Coach.

ELECTIONS BOARD-FLAG FLAP

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Oops! The stars go on top. Voters in the District of Columbia have gotten their election guide. But the DC flag graphic on the cover is upside-down. The nation's capital has a flag with three stars on top and three stripes on the bottom. Yesterday, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Board of Elections said the seeming goof was deliberate, meant to cut through voter apathy. Later, the Washington Post reported Board of Elections officials told the city council the flag flip was a mistake.

4-MINUTE ARREST

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) -- Pockets overflowing with cash might seem like good thing. But not if you're a bank robber. A suspect was busted just four minutes after a Wells Fargo branch in Spokane, Washington, was robbed. Officer Shane Phillips was working an extra-duty security detail. He noticed a man walking past him with money falling out of his pockets and Phillips had just heard a radio call about the bank stickup. A police spokeswoman says Phillips detained the suspect and called for back up. Police say 37-year-old Jerrod Bestrom was booked into the county jail for investigation of first-degree robbery.

RAFT-A-PALOOZA

LACONIA, N.H. (AP) -- It's not a lunch date but a launch date. A New England group says it has set a new Guinness World Record for the simultaneous launch of 396 canoes and kayaks. It all happened in less than 15 seconds and was organized by the New Hampshire Lakes Association. The record attempt was part of LakeFest 2014: Raft-a-Palooza in August. The festival is a fundraiser for the group, which works to protect lakes and their watersheds.

DRUGS IN M&MS BAG

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) -- Those aren't M-and-M's. Two New Mexico women are charged with trying to smuggle drugs into an Albuquerque jail. Authorities say a guard saw the women stash a bag of M-and-M's behind an ATM in the lobby of the Metropolitan Detention Center. Officials say the candy wrapper held heroin, pot, tobacco, and other contraband. The women were arrested.
