Congrats to the MTSU golf team - 05/12/14

I had the opportunity to go down and meet with the Middle Tennessee golf team today. The Blue Raiders are preparing for their 6th trip to the NCAA Regionals in the last 7 years. Coach Whit Turnbow has the MTSU golf team humming right now, and they sound full of confidence as they'll head to Columbia, Missouri for the tourney. Their competition is fierce. Oklahoma State is the number 1 team in the region, but the Blue Raiders believe they belong with the best in the country. The top 5 teams out of 14 will qualify to advance to the NCAA tournament later this month.

MTSU made it to the NCAA tournament in 2008 under Whitbow, and they're hoping this year they can repeat the feat!

CHRIS CHRISTIE

LIVINGSTON, NJ (AP) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is going back to his old high school gym today. It's for a political workout. Christie is officially entering a crowded Republican field for the presidential nomination. He'll be the 14th candidate to announce, with at least two more expected to join. Chistie will make his announcement at Livingston High School, where he once won a presidential election. But that was for class president.

PRE-CIVIL WAR BASEBALL CARD

NEW YORK (AP) -- It's worth a lot more than your old baseball cards. A card from the 1860s is going up for auction in a month. The pre-Civil War Brooklyn Atlantics team card has been in the same family for over 150 years. The seller is Florence Sasso, of Great Barrington, Massachusetts. Her great-great-uncle, Archibald McMahon, was an outfielder for the squad. He's pictured in the photo with eight teammates. Heritage Auctions estimates it could go for $50,000.

CALIFORNIA CHEERLEADERS

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Pro cheerleaders are professionals. That's the gist of legislation passed by California lawmakers. The measure makes it clear that cheerleaders are employees of sports teams. It would require the teams to pay their cheerleaders at least the minimum wage. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez says many teams treat their cheerleaders like glorified volunteers. The San Diego Democrat adds that cheerleaders deserve the same level of respect and dignity as other team employees. The bill now goes to Gov. Jerry Brown for his signature.

GREEK YOGURT-SCHOOLS

BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- School kids will have a yogurt option beginning this fall. Chobani says its Greek yogurt has been tapped by the feds as a meat substitute for school lunches. The U.S. Department of Agriculture selected Chobani after a successfull pilot program. Greek yogurt is a thicker style yogurt that has twice the protein of traditional yogurts and uses hormone-free milk.
