Election Day on April 15th? - 04/16/14

It's a day after tax day, and I was thinking about how much more productive we could make April 15th. It's probably not a surprise that election day is seven months later in the year. Congress wants to make sure they don't have an angry electorate on their hands when voters go to the polls. But maybe that's exactly what we need.

Why not have election day on the same day that is the deadline to file your taxes? If you're happy, it'll be reflected in your vote. But if you're not happy, that'll be reflected as well.

  Just a thought.

PARTY SCHOOLS

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Party on Fighting Illini! The University of Illinois claims the top spot on the list of party schools from the Princeton Review's college guide. An unnamed student tells the publication the "drinking culture is huge" there. It's not the sort of reputation the school likes. University spokeswoman Robin Kaler says their students are "serious" and "hard working." The University of Iowa, a former number-one, is second on the latest party list. Looking for food over fun? The Princeton Review says the small, exclusive Bowdoin College in Maine has the best campus grub.

Ghost Pepper Ice Cream

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (AP) -- You might scream for this ice cream -- after tasting it. The Ice Cream Store near the boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, offers Ghost Pepper Ice Cream. It's spiked with some of the world's hottest chilies along with fiery pepper extracts and sauces. Pittsburgh tourist Jeff Hobbs says if he tried eating a whole cone, they'd be writing his obituary. The Ice Cream Store owner Chip Hearn tells the News Journal his customers have to sign a waiver before they can try Ghost Pepper.

FABRICATED CARJACKING

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- A northern New Jersey man is headed to prison in a carjacking case. But there's a twist. It was his own car. Authorities say Maurice Douglas, of East Orange, made up the story about his Mercedes being jacked. Yesterday, he was sentenced to three years in the slammer, after pleading guilty to insurance fraud. He admitted he had hoped to get more than 38-grand for his `07 Mercedes S-550. Investigators said security video didn't back up Douglas' story about being carjacked by two men. The damaged car was found the next day in an abandoned lot.

WATERMELON CONTEST

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) -- It was a spittin' good time in Portland, Oregon. The watermelonseed-spitting contest has returned. Local lawmakers put their expectorating skills to the test, using donated melons from Hermiston. Hermiston Mayor David Drotzmann beat Portland Mayor Charlie Hales. The East Oregonian reports the seed-spitting contest was held annually for almost two decades before going on a hiatus that lasted several years.
