Food for thought - 06/28/14

What I find so interesting is how each year can be so different around the same times.  As I was looking up the almanac information today I noticed that 2 years ago we were extremely hot.  In fact, we were setting record highs all over the place.  Two days in a row we reach 109 which beat the all-time high of 107.  It was extremely dry and most of the mid-south was in some sort of drought. We fast forward 2 years and look at us now. Temperatures haven't been that bad and we are consistently getting rain.  I just find it fascinating.  I look forward to when the technology improves to the ability where we can forecast droughts and hurricanes and even tornadoes with precision accuracy.  Thatll help up prepare in ways Im sure we never thought possible! Just food for thought.

MICHELLE OBAMA-RECIPE CONTEST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- First lady Michelle Obama is calling on the lunch bunch, again. Mrs. Obama is challenging kids to come up with more healthy lunch recipes. It's part of her Let's Move! campaign to reduce childhood obesity through diet and exercise. Winners from each state and U.S. territory will be flown to Washington this summer for a "state dinner" for kids at the White House. Some of those kids' winning recipes will be served at the White House event.

CAMPUS COWBOY

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- Sure, the University of Kentucky has a Final Four basketball team. But the school also has a rodeo team -- which is bad news for a runaway steer. Rodeo team member Adam Menker used his lasso skills to capture the animal. The Lexington Herald-Leader reports the steer roamed on and near campus for more than an hour yesterday. Students came out to see what all the excitement was about. Videos of the campus cowboy have also gone viral. Menker says he never figured he would need his roping skills on campus.

MARIJUANA-WELFARE

DENVER (AP) -- No welfare for pot. That's what many Colorado legislators want. State lawmakers have passed a measure that would ban welfare debit cards at marijuana dispensary ATMs or strip clubs. The bill has now been sent to Gov. John Hickenlooper for action. Many dispensary ATMs are already set up to reject the electronic state benefit cards. But the bill doesn't give officials a way to monitor how those ATMs are used.

HOUSTON ASTRODOME'S FUTURE

HOUSTON (AP) -- It was once called the Eighth Wonder of the World. Now, the Houston Astrodome faces an uncertain future. Officials are working on a plan that would turn the iconic dome into a massive indoor park. The Harris County Commissioners Court has given the go-ahead to implement a proposal creating a civic space out of the old stadium. The Astrodome opened nearly 50 years ago, in April of 1965 and closed in 2009. Voters turned down a referendum in 2013 convert the facility into a convention center.
